Hot Swap

The ability to hot swap memory, drives, or other peripherals is a key functionality of server, computing, and telecom hardware. ON Semiconductor’s load switch and eFuse portfolios provide an easy, compact, and efficient solution with the hot swap controller and MOSFET integrated into one device. ON Semiconductor carries eFuses for 12 V, 5 V, and 3.3 V power domains, with 48 V compatible devices in development. We use the latest MOSFET technology to provide efficient, reliable, and compact hot swap capability with a variety of protection features.

NIS5431 and NIS5452 Performance and Functionality
For many years ON Semiconductor eFuses have been used in a variety of applications such as hard drives, servers, and motherboards. They provide several protection features, they are reliable, and they are continually being improved upon. The NIS5135, NIS5132, and NIS5232 eFuses are some of the time-tested devices that have paved the way for ON Semiconductor’s newest eFuse products.

NIS5132/5 Demo Board
The NIS5132 and NIS5135 electronic fuses are monolithic, integrated circuits that offer superior protection for overcurrent, overvoltage The NIS5132 is designed for 12 volt systems while the NIS5135 is designed for 5 volt systems. These two chips can be easily interfaced for systems that include both a 5 and a 12 volt bus. By tying the enable pins together both units will shutdown if either unit encounters a fault condition.

NIS5112 Hot Plug Evaluation Board Manual
The NIS5112 Demo board is a simple circuit which biases the NIS5112 device so that its functionality can easily be observed. It contains an input capacitor of 1 F and output capacitor of 100 F, as well as a bleeding load resistor of 2 k.

NIS5112 Transient Performance
The NIS5112 is an electronic fuse that incorporates a number of protection features. These include current limiting, thermal protection, and overvoltage protection. This device can replace a fuse/zener combination to add increased reliability and functionality along with the ability to reset automatically.

eFuse Load Current Measurement
The On Semiconductor eFuse protection devices are primarily used for limiting the system load current in the event of overload or short circuit conditions. Almost all of those eFuse protection devices provide additional features such as soft start, output voltage clamp, reverse current protection, adjustable load current limit with external resistor and so on.

eFuse Reverse Voltage Protection
ON Semiconductor’s eFuses offer low cost, low impedance solutions for bus protection and offer much faster protection than many fuse solutions. They are an effective replacement for a polyfuse and TVS clamping diode.

The Importance of Compensation Capacitors on the eFuse Power Line
ON Semiconductor produces a wide variety of silicon based protection products including current limiting devices such as Electronic Fuses (eFuses). During an over−current stress, eFuses can limit the current applied to a load as well as remove power from the load entirely

Hot‐Plug Insertion Startup Time Delay for eFuse
The eFuse protection devices are used for limiting the system load current in the event of an overload or a short circuit. Many applications employ ON Semiconductor eFuses at the power input stage of the system between the main power input connector and DC−DC converters or power regulators.

Paralleling eFuses
The standard 12 V, 5 V and 3.3 V electronic fuses from ON Semiconductor provide overcurrent and overvoltage protection and come in different current limit configurations.

Enable Pin Operation and Functions of eFuses
ON Semiconductor electronic fuses (eFuses) are analog integrated circuits that are used to protect circuits operating from 3.3, 5, or 12 V DC supplies. They have numerous protection functionalities such as overvoltage clamping, current limiting, thermal shutdown, and a controlled output voltage slew rate. They are available in thermal latching or thermal auto-retry configurations.

Advantages of eFuses Versus PTC Resettable Fuses
Overcurrent protection is a basic necessity for electrical devices. While many people are familiar with fuses and household circuit breakers, few are intimately familiar with the kinds of overcurrent protection devices that are found in electronics.
